William Murray, a cooper purchased land on “Ye High Street” (Essex Str) and erected the house by July of 1687. By 1759 the property was defined as the Northern and Southern halves of his “mansion” and divided “as far as the middle chimney” – each half being owned by his sons, William and Jonathan, both coopers. The property remained in the Murray family until 1795 when the Southern end was conveyed to Ebenezer Slocum, a mariner. It was then conveyed in 1811 to Jonathan Andrew (a trader), Samuel Leach (a boatbuilder) and Jonathan Becket (a shipwright) and that is the last research deed of the Southern End.
The Northern end remained in the Murray family until 1814 when it was purchased by Jonathan Andrew, a trader, for $150 (same person who bought 1/3 of the Southern End in 1811???). 30 years later the same property sells for $600 to Latty Vincent, who sells it to George Gerry, a trader, in 1870 for $2000!!! At the time, George Berry owned many properties including 25, 39, 41 and 43 Essex Str, 110-112 and 129-131 Derby Str and 11 and 31 Turner Str. His estate is broken up and in 1923 #39 is conveyed to V. John Dooley.
